into the woods

Andover High School Theatre, 2011

Into the Woods

The stumps of two felled trees provide the main acting areas for this Stephen Sondheim masterpiece. With limited crossover and wing space, and no orchestra pit, economy was needed for the many locations in the show. The three large upstage trees revolved to become the three houses, and the various ramps and platforms served to provide settings for the other places visited by the characters throughout the story.

Into the Woods

Above the main platforms, you can just make out Cinderella's evil Stepmother and Stepsisters in their carriage on their way to the ball.

Into the Woods

A flown roofline provides a sense of place as we visit the house of Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother.

Into the Woods

For the second act, the proscenium trees were repositioned to reflect the changing reality of the woods and provide new obstacles for the characters as the story continued.
